Wave Lines by Nomad Editions

Cardiff local Jon Cohen has helped start an innovative online and smart phone enabled biweekly surf magazine called Wave Lines.  In this issue we got interviewed and written up by local freelance writer, surfer, traveler Keil Miller for Enjoy Handplanes. If you're interested in reading what Keil had to say you can get a free eval subscription at http://nomadeditions.com/.

Thank you Keil and Jon for the opportunity to be a part of such a great project!

Enjoy Leftover Resin for Christmas

In the spirit of Enjoy we have made some cool ornaments out of the leftover resin from the bottom of Kipp's resin cups. For those of you not familiar with the glassing process there is always a little resin leftover after you glass a surfboard (or handplane in our situation). Historically these leftovers have been seen as trash and were thrown away. But not anymore! We think these little beauties are just too cool to throw out. Now they can live a happy life on your Christmas Tree each year and avoid the smelly dump!

If you'd like one of these festive little resin wonders, stop by Surfy Surfy Surf Shop to pick one up. JP will be handing them out like candy to good little surfboard loving boys and girls. Hurry though kids, we dropped off a batch last night and they are already gone as they are free and will go fast! We'll drop off more today in time for the Surfy Surfy Jaz night so get one while you listen to the smooth sounds of Surfy Jaz.

Stay tuned for more fun things we are doing with our leftovers in 2011!

Thank you so much for ordering an Enjoy Gift Certificate. You are amazing. You spend your days working hard at work or with the kids (or both!) and barely have enough time to get your own needs met, and yet, you found the time to go to the enjoyhandplanes.com  website and place an order for something that will not benefit you directly but you know will bring a tear to your man's eye.  We respect that about you. You are so thoughtful like that.

Sneak Peak: Enjoy "Leftovers" Art Project

"Frank" by Rodney McCoubrey: Made from the tail of Bob Roger's first surfboard, Camper Shell Skin, Muffin Tin for Candleholder, Leftover Resin form Glassing and Paint Can Lid: Size 43"x25

"Wart" by Rodney McCoubrey: Made from Enjoy practice piece and the nose of a Stewart longboard, Rusted Cans and Love: Size 19"x17

"Zack" Thurster Tail, Old Broom, Resin Circles, Rusted Nails and Stomp Pad: Size 38"x17"

Here are a few samples from a little program we started called Leftovers. We have teamed up with our good friend Rodney "Rodrigo" McCoubrey to do an art project with the leftover scraps from the broken boards we make handplanes out of. For those of you who make The Leucadia Project a place you call home, you know Rodney's work. Rodney is world renowned for his work in eco folk art and we are so proud to be working with him.

After salvaging the broken boards we use to make the handplanes we were adamant about using all that we could so that as little as possible goes into the trash. Since the leftovers where not useable by us we handed them over to Rodney to do his thing and were blown away by what he came up with. These are just a few of what came out of his studio. There are more pieces to come!

Since Rodney, Kipp and I are passionate about art education we are also donating a portion of the proceeds to support our local elementary art programs. The first school we will sponsor is Paul Ecke Central. More on that later.

Stay tuned for more works by Rodney. If you would like one of these please feel free to contact us.

Mick and Rasta

We sent a couple of handplanes to Australia to our good friend Mick Waters and made a special one for his good friend Dave Rastovitch as well. Dave is one of our heros so it was an honor to build a handplane for him.  Mick just sent this shot back to give me a little feedback on how he liked it. He looks pretty stoked. Thanks Mick for all the help and inspiration. I hope you guys have fun! *enjoy

Article in The Coast News - Old surfboards get new tricks

The talented Lillian Cox of the Coast News interviewed us over the weekend. It was posted online today. Lillian is an Encinitas local and talented journalist. I love her work because her goal is to write positive stores to better our community. How cool is that? Lillian thank you so much for taking the time to share our story. You are amazing. *Enjoy

Thank you Rip Curl!

Here is an email I got from Rip Curl. These guys are great...

Good afternoon gentleman

My name is Mark and I work for Ripcurl, in the service dept. We handle all repairs and warranty issues for all of our products including wetsuits. The reason for my email is to see if you would have an interest in the extra material that is left over from repaired suits or suits that have been replaced due to a defect. We do have a recycle center that we generally donate to, however in being a handplane fan myself I would prefer to bring new life to an item that will bring more joy to those that enjoy our oceans. So if you would like first discuss this further please feel free to contact me at the number I have provided.

Regards

Mark Tierheimer

I was so stoked to get this email from Mark. As soon as I needed rubber he sent me a box full of old wetties down to the PB shop where Steve Stout hooked me up with even more material! These guys get what we are doing and are super supportive.

Thank you much Rip Curl! They are going to good use.

For all you other companies out there. If you are into what we are doing, contact us. We'd love to see if we could reuse your old materials. *Enjoy

TBG_Retro1-440x283
Our friends over at thegreenerblue.com are all about sustainable and eco-friendly products in the surf industry and are huge handplane fans. So it was a no brainer to do a collaboration with them to support their cause. The Greener Blue also chose one of our favorite organizations, Save The Waves as their charity.  From the sale of each Greener Blue model $10 will be donated to them t keep them fighting for our waves.

If you want one of these let us know. Here are 3 we just finished up and shipped out and are off getting some barrels as I type.

Thanks to Mark Marovich from The Greener Blue and Josh Berry from Save the waves for the collaboration. It's one of our favorites! Enjoy.

Liquid Salt Collaboration Supports SurfersHealing.org

A while back we thought it would be fun to collaborate with some of the people we know and respect in our surf community to do a program that we could have fun with as well as have an opportunity to give back to some of the organizations we feel need our support.

What we came up with was a Collaboration Program where we pick one of our heros in the surf world and collaborate with them to design a model that will give a bit back to a charity of their choice.

Our first collaboration is with Glenn Sakamoto of  Liquid Salt Magazine. For those of you familiar with Liquid Salt you know Glenn as the brains and talent behind the interviews of the surf world's elite.

We didn't know Glenn that well so we approached him to see if he would be into it. Turned out he was already a fan of our work so he was stoked and eager to get one designed. Glenn is an amazing brand designer so it was fun to come up with his model. After some ideas we settled on doing one after his Bing he loves so much. That way he can have a little mini me of that board.

When it was done we took it with us to some shows we did and people loved it. Everyone wanted to buy it. It took us a while to get it to him but when we finally did we were stoked to hear that his lovely wife actually let him put it in his living room! Guys, as you know it is almost impossible to get any beloved board in your living room!  Believe me as much as he'd like to have that Bing on his wall there is no chance that is happening.
When Glenn was asked who he wanted to support with proceeds from the sale of the model he quickly chose Surfers Healing, a non profit organization started and run by Izzy and Danielle Paskowitz.  The organization is special because it uses surfing to heal autism with amazing results. See more on their program here.

If you'd like to support Surfers Healing and help an autistic child learn to surf you can donate directly to them here or you can purchase the Liquid Salt model and we will donate to them for you.

Todd and Nick's First Day Out

Love it. Keep sending them in. Enjoy.

The Trophy

We got asked by Betty Steele to do the 2nd place Business Class trophy for the Cardiff Classic and Green Beach Fair this year. The guys from Zenbu/Rimel's in Cardiff won it. Kipp did an amazing job on this one. The resin tint is a work of art and he mounted it on some old drift wood he had. If you are going out to eat, stop by their restaurant and take a look. They are great food too!

Surfy Surfy Handplane

If you get a chance stop by Surfy Surfy to check out JP's St. Pierre's handplane we did together. Designed and painted by JP, shaped by me and glassed by Kipp. This thing is so cool. I had no idea JP had such a talent for drawing. JP really wanted to make a handplane that looked like the Bonzer Bumble Bee so we made this little beauty with a diamond tail.

This one is not for sale as he liked it so much he kept it for him himself. However we are making more and if you want one just let us know and JP will paint it up for you.

Scuttlefish @ Revolver

Our friend Brian Lam from the blog TheScuttleFish.com is having a Pop Up Shop at the famous Revolver shop in San Francisco. Brian is a big supporter of our Enjoy Handplane project and will be displaying a group of them with board bags next to handplanes by Danny Hes, Photography by Ryan Tatar, drawings and sculpture by Jay Nelson and tons more cool stuff.  If you are up in the SF area the opening is this Friday and the shop will last for 6 weeks.

All proceeds from the venture will go to Save our Waves.

For more info go to: www.thescuttlefish.com/revolver/

The Brian Lam Experiment

Our friend Brian Lam over at The Scuttle Fish had us make this little guy for him to do some testing with fin set ups. It has 3 fin plugs so he can try various configurations. He bodysurfs Ocean Beach SF a bunch and is completely hooked on handpanes. He reported back that the twin fin set up was best and the single fin was to shallow to do any good. We'll be making more fins for him to try out and see how it goes. Stay tuned.  Enjoy.

Skye Walker - Paints another Handplane

Our friend Skye got commission to paint another handplane. This one is really cool. Check out the time-lapse! If you want Skye to paint you a handplanes let us know. Enjoy.
