No Plastic Bag Day and the Bag Monster

The average consumer uses 500 plastic bags a year. Which I had no idea. Think about that, it's a trip to the grocery store, drugstore and take out three times a week and there you go. Times 2,000,000 people and that is a billion bags a year.

I met "Bag Monster" last night who filled me in on what I needed to know about bags at my daughters school. Apparently there is an organization that educates communities by going to events and talking about plastic bags. Very cool.

You can learn more about bags and helping at www.bagmonser.com. Above is the Encinitas Bag Monster and he is a wealth of knowledge on the growing problem of plastic bags. If you want to find out more about what you can do to reduce your waste, contact him, he's quite friendly for being a monster.

You can find him at:

Petra Kavanagh is the genus behind the Manufacturing Stoke DVD packaging. Made from pages of post read surf mags and sealed with post consumer paper labels. It is eco for sure but what I like is that it is so damn cool. Each one is a piece of art. Good job Petra

Handplanes of the day: via facebook - don't miss out

For those you who aren't a member of our *enjoy handplanes facebook group yet I encourage you to join in on all the fun. Every day (well almost every day we do have to get some work done) we post a handplane of the day. It's been fun to share and hear from everyone their reactions on which ones they like, and see all the photos people have been taking of bodysurfing.  A lot more goes on behind the scenes in there then on the blog so I encourage you to check it out. In the mean time here's a few you've been missing.

For Auction Today

What: *enjoy Handplane for silent auction.
When: 11:30am to 2:20 TODAY Sunday Nov 6th.
Where: Bali Hai Restaurant
Why: To rase money for a scholarship in the name of Skip and Donna Frye that goes to help good kids that ended up in continuation high school go to college.
Who: The Jonathan Tarr Foundation + Skip and Donna Frye

The Jonathan Tarr Foundation is an amazing organization. It is based in Encinitas and every year helps about 30 kids that want to go to collage with small starter scholarships to get their foot in the door. The kids that get these scholarships all went to continuation high school and all where recommended by their counselors to get the awards. These are bright kids that make a wrong turn at some point.

This organization recognizes that although you may make some bad choices along the way, you are not bad at heart and deserve to be given a second chance. Many of these kids start off to go to a JC and end up at 4 year prestigious colleges, graduating and going on to have very successful lives.

If it wasn't for the JTF no one would have helped them.

Todays auction is in conjunction with a humanitarian award being given to Skip and Donna Frye. Tickets for lunch and the ceremony are $55. All the proceeds go to the scholarships. If you want to attend. Call Sherry Yardley at 760-818-0462

Enjoy Halloween

Amazing art on handplane by Erik Baldwin of Nirvana Surfboards. Not so amazing art on pumpkin by me.

New Bags from The Progress Project and Sea Pod

There are some new bags available for your handplanes.

Noah from The Progress Project just dropped off some padded handplane bags made from old banners. They are really cool. They are like travel bags and feature padded protection, a zippered pocket and a handle. It is like a small travel bag for your handplane. Each one is made form an old banner that would otherwise be going to the landfill and thus no two designs are alike. If you want one of these let contact us. We are offering them on a first come first purchase bases.

Aaron from Sea Pod is also offering amazing hand crafted bags made from reused and vintage materials. This one uses an old army blanket for extra padding. If you love those vintage full size bags you will love these. Available on a custom bases. Let us know if you'd like one.

"Enjoy Madonna" by Rodney McCoubrey

"Enjoy Madonna" by Rodney McCoubrey, broken board foam, Entropy bio epoxy, baja nails, barbed wire, end of resin cup.

In all the handplanes we have made we have had only one go horribly wrong to where we couldn't use it. We never like throwing anything away so we saved it knowing that some day it could be put to good use. To be honest I didn't know what the use was but our good friend Rodney did and he talked us into handing it over. I'm so stoked we did. Good work Rodney!
